Each year the Topper Class Association organise an Open Coaching programme for the region’s Topper sailors. Open Coaching is an excellent opportunity to develop your skills during the winter season alongside other Topper sailors. It aims to increase sailors’ skills, confidence and enjoyment in Topper sailing. The coaching will focus on racing skills and racing practice, but will also cover fitness, diet and nutrition.

Two Bolton boats took part in the GP14 Youth Nationals at Nantwich and Borders this weekend. Alex Collins and Peter Mackin had spent the week at the GP14 youth training event at Crosby (which I’m sure they’d be delightted to tell you about) and were raring to go to the extent that they were all seen doing a warm up run before the races on Saturday and Sunday. They needed to as it was a cold morning. James Shevelan-Hobbs and Lewis Shevelan also attended though they weren’t quite up for the morning run.

Sixteen boats took part and the racing was excellent. A nice fresh breeze and a course set to make the most of good spinnaker work, made for close racing. Alex and Peter did well finnishing mid fleet obviously benefitting from their weeks training. James and Lewis struggled a bit with the breeze, needing another 10 stone between them to bring them up to optimum weight, but still weren’t last. The winning GP was helmed by Sam Watson and crewed by Andy Hunter, who are both members of the Nantwich and Border Counties Sailing Club, after winning the last three races.

I’ve been to four GP14 Youths now and they are always a pleasure to watch. The GP14 Youths is being held at Bolton next year and would be good to see a good turn out. A number of the boats at the Youths had been kindly lent by other sailors including one brand new boat. With the 24 hour race being a topic for discussion recently maybe members would consider lending their boats at the event and maybe we can develop our own team in the same way South Staffs have (http://www.southstaffssailingclub.co.uk/news/news_article.php?article_id=97), fielding seven boats at the Youths.

Despite the close racing there were no serious collisions. One ambulance was needed for a dislocated knee though. Legs really aren’t supposed to bend like that.

Regards
John Shevelan

Like many of his friends at both his Sailing Clubs, young Alex Collins is always on the water. He’s often seen in different boats crewing or helming …. very few sailors will have escaped Alex’s requests for him to sail their boat (please say ‘no’ if it’s not possible or desirable!). This tenacity on Alex’s part and the support and advice received from both memberships, particularly all the volunteer Instructors and Coaches, have contributed to his recent success at his dads North East sailing club and here at Bolton.

His more recent achievements include coming first out of 70 entrants to win the RYA North East Youth Travellers Series 2011 which resulted in an article, published in a local newspaper’s sports section, showing Alex with his glass trophy (which his mam managed to successfully re-glue after she accidentally dropped it …… ooops). This win brought him to the attention of the South Tyneside Sea Scouts who asked him to join them and during his second week of membership he managed to come 2nd overall in his Laser during their National Championships. These successes led their leaders to ask that he participate in the National School Sailing Association Topper Team Championships held at Birmingham on the 1st and 2nd of October. 32 teams of 3 participated, including some Topper National Squad members, but the underdogs (Alex along with his 2 Geordie mates Kieran and David) managed to keep them all at bay and went onto claim first place.

As this particular type of sailing requires strict rule adherence, teamwork, maths and tactical skills, Alex’s mam now knows for certain that her son can do soooooo much better in his school studies ……

As a result of winning the NSSA Team Championships the group are invited to enter the RYA Eric Twiname Youth and Junior Team Racing Championships at Oxford Sailing Club sailing Fireflys – please wish him luck.

Alex and Lynne would like to thank those all at Bolton who devote so many hours of time freely to the BSC membership, especially Mike for his ‘take no prisoners’ style GP14 coaching, our Flag Officers and all those who arrange the events, fix the boats and move the jetties (hours and hours of time), sort out the power boat fuel and the fuel for our bellies (…. and do the blooming washing up) and, of course, those who coach/instruct both us & our children; even though many of them have no children currently learning to sail themselves – completely selfless behavior!

…. Think not what your club can do for you but be mindful of what you can do for your club!
(think that may be pinched from Churchill or JFK???)

MORE VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED & ARE MOST WELCOME

Sailors from across the country have only one week remaining to enter this year’s 2011 RYA Volvo Zone and Home Country Championships, as the final deadline for entries is Friday 16th September.

The 2011 RYA Volvo Zone and Home Country Championships will welcome in excess of 1,000 young sailors across nine different venues throughout the United Kingdom on the weekend of the 24-25 September.

With Volvo continuing their support of all nine events for the third year running, the Championships traditionally mark the end of the Junior racing season and the start of a hard winter’s training.

The event is the RYA Regional Championship for each Zone and is aimed at sailors in local clubs under the age of 16 who are racing in the RYA pathway classes. It is a great first-time event for club sailors, giving them the opportunity to get a real feel of a Championship atmosphere.

The Championships are also a key event for any young sailor wishing to be selected for the RYA Zone and Home Country squads and provide the stars of the future with the perfect opportunity to test their racing skills in a fiercely competitive environment.

Each one of the nine venues used are renowned for staging major events and will provide the Junior sailors with the perfect setting to develop their sailing skills and racing ability whilst under the watchful eye of the RYA High Performance Managers and coaches. Racing takes place across the nine RYA-supported Junior dinghy and windsurfing classes including the Mirror, Optimist, Topper, RS Feva, Cadets and the windsurfers on the Bic Techno using the open 4.5, and 5.8 rigs, and the Techno 6.8’s and Techno 7.8’s – classes vary according to each venue.

For the first time, three of the Zones (Restronguet, Grafham, Derwent Reservoir) and all Home Counties Championships will offer ‘novice’ regatta fleets in Toppers and Optimists. This is an event for sailors to set themselves an end-of-year goal after training and racing during the summer months. It will give young sailors a good learning experience to help start them along the pathway to success.

Competitors are urged to submit their entries online at www.ryaracingevents.org.uk before Friday 16th September - due to safety considerations and the size and complexity of the event, entries after this date cannot be accepted. RYA organisers are urging athletes to confirm their attendance and submit their on-line entry promptly to avoid disappointment.

In addition to the RYA High Performance Managers, sailors will have the chance to showcase their talents in front of Skandia Team GBR and Team Volvo for Life sailors. 470 sailor Saskia Clark and Elliot 6.0m sailor Lucy Macgregor will be visiting the South Zone, top British RS:X Windsurfer Nick Dempsey will be at the East Zone, Paralympian Helena Lucas will be appearing at the South East Zone and the West Zone will welcome Lucy’s fellow Match Racer, Kate Macgregor.

The Skandia Team GBR and Team Volvo for Life sailors will meet the youngsters and chat about their sailing career, from club level to first regional event and how they progressed to elite level.

The 2011 RYA Volvo Zone and Home Countries Championships will be staged at the following venues:

The RYA Volvo South Zone Championships – Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, Dorset.

The RYA Volvo South West Zone Championships – Restronguet Sailing Club, Cornwall.

The RYA Volvo South East Zone Championships – Bewl Valley Sailing Club, Kent.

The RYA Volvo East Zone Championships– Grafham Sailing Club, Cambridgeshire.

The RYA Volvo West Zone Championships– Blithfield Sailing Club, Staffordshire

The RYA Volvo North Zone Championships – Derwent Reservoir, County Durham

Volvo Welsh Youth & Junior Championships – Pwllheli Sailing Club, Gwynedd

RYA Scotland Volvo Youth and Junior Championships – Largs Sailing Club, Largs.

RYANI Volvo Youth Championships in association with McCready Sailboats – Strangford Lough Yacht Club, Co. Down

All sailors wishing to be considered for a National Junior Squad OR a Zone Squad place are requested to complete an online application form. This can be found at www.ryaracingevents.org.uk by following the links to Junior Squad applications.
