Breaking down barriers |
|
In a gusty force 4, a team of WLYC enthusiastic volunteers took the pupils out on the water in GP14s, a Vareo and a Wayfarer. For most of the children this was their first chance to get out on the Marine Lake and the smiles, waves and cheers were a clear indication of how much they enjoyed the experience.
Head Teacher of Holy Trinity School, Sue Mawdsley, commented on the success of the initiative: “When Tom first came to the school, some of the children stood back in fear or mocked him, but being able to take part in activities alongside the police officers has really helped to break down barriers. It is also helping to give the children an opportunity to try a sport they might not have otherwise accessed.”
At the end of their session on the water the pupils proudly collected an OnBoard certificate and badge to help remember their first voyage! |
NORTH WEST SAILORS WIN LASER 2000 NATIONALS
Mike Hart and Sally Kilpatrick are the Laser 2000 National Champions.
Eighty three boats entered the 10th Anniversary Laser 2000 Nationals at Hayling Island SC. On the opening day, conditions were 15 to 20 knots with gusts reaching 25 knots. Winners of the first race were Matt and Clare Sargent of the Army Sailing Assoc, second were Dave and Scott Adams from Broadstairs SC, third Rob and Katie Burrdge from Weir Wood SC.
Following the testing conditions out in Hayling Bay on day 1, the decision was to race day 2 in Chichester Harbour, as the wind continued around 20 knots. Racing on the high water in the harbour, three races were completed in fine conditions with the wind finally easing during the third race.
Day 3 of the Championship was Mike Hart and Sally Kilpatrick day – three races and three wins for the Port Dinorwic SC pair, who went into the final day as clear leaders.
Day 4 – Three more races were held in Hayling Bay to complete the Laser 2000 championship on Friday. In the final race, Hart and Kilpatrick rounded off a great week’s performance with a final win and the Laser 2000 National Title. Hart and Kilpatrick completed the series without a result worse than a third place after discards. Second went to Holroyd and Rusbatch of Weir Wood SC with third to the late charging Rob and Kate Burridge of Weir Wood SC.

Sign up now to avoid disappointment
RYA Eric Twiname Youth and Junior Team Racing Championships entry is open
It totally captured the imagination of the country’s young sailors last year as organisers reluctantly had to turn down entries for the full-to-capacity event. Now entries are open online for the 2009 RYA Eric Twiname Youth and Junior Team Racing Championships, which are once again gearing up to be a highlight on the RYA Racing calendar. The 2009 RYA Eric Twiname Youth and Junior Team Racing Championships will take place at Farmoor Reservoir, near Oxford on 17-18 October and entries will be exclusively through the RYA Racing Events website. Entries will be accepted from teams of six to sail in three-boat teams in Firefly and Feva dinghies for the Youth and Junior events respectively with a maximum 24 teams accepted for the Youth competition and 30 teams for the Juniors. Some 300 youngsters contested the event at Farmoor last November with teams entered from clubs, class associations, schools and RYA National and Zone Squads as well as some private entries. This year teams will be looking to topple 2008 champions West Kirby Youth (Youth) and Wales Union (Junior) from their perch. Entries for the 2009 RYA Eric Twiname Youth and Junior Team Racing Championships close on Monday 21 September and entry will only be confirmed once payment has been received in full. Entries will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.

TEAM RACING
Less than week remaining to enter 2008 RYA Youth Nationals
RYA 18+ programme boosting British team racing
Are you an 18-year-old considering which direction to now take your sailing or are you just about to head off to university and wondering how you can continue to sail once you’re away from home?
The RYA 18+ Team Racing Training Programme could provide the answers you are searching for.
Team Racing is a major part of national and international sail race competition, with the biennial ISAF World Team Racing Championships the pinnacle international event, as well as being the primary sailing activity undertaken at British universities.
Through the RYA 18+ Team Racing Training Programme the door to this exciting world could be opened to you.
Unlike in normal fleet racing where the aim of the game is to finish first past the post, team racing involves teams of six sailors in three boats going head-to-head against another team of three boats to try to get the best overall points score for the team.
As a result it is a true test of a crews’ boat handling skills, decision-making abilities and tactical nous.
To develop this activity the RYA runs a three-part programme open to sailors aged 18 and over with the aims of enabling sailors to participate effectively on the UK Open and University Team Racing circuits, to develop and strengthen the skills required to compete at the top national and international level and to select teams to represent RYA 18+ Team Racing teams for national and international events.
Stage One of the programme is Autumn Training, designed to provide fast conversion for those whose background is mainly fleet racing or those with team racing backgrounds who seek to develop their skills.
The Autumn Training takes place from 9 – 11 September in Oxford and the deadline to apply for a place on the course is Wednesday 26 August.
Stage Two of the programme is Development Training to provide intensive training for those who are currently participating in UK Open and / or university team racing. This training will be used to select 24 sailors for stage three.
The Development Training takes place on 18-19 December at Bough Beech, Kent and the deadline to apply for a place at the training is Tuesday 9 December.
Stage Three is selection for the RYA Selected Team Race Training, to enhance the skills of the best team racers to improve their competition performance.
This training will be used to select the RYA 18+ Team, which will receive automatic entry to the RYA National Team Racing Championships, The Wilson Trophy and other appropriate international events.
The selected training takes place on 23-24 January 2010 and 27-28 February 2010 and is by invitation only.
In 2007 RYA Team GBR were crowned Under 21 World Team Racing champions while one of Britain’s senior representative teams claimed Open silver. At the 2009 Worlds in Australia earlier this year the Under 21s – all sailors from West Kirby Youth – won bronze.
To get involved in RYA 18+ Team Racing visit www.rya.org.uk/racing and follow the links to Team Racing.
AWARDS
NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR RYA REGIONAL YOUNG SAILORS OF THE YEAR
The RYA has begun its search for 2009’s RYA Regional Young Sailors by opening nominations for the 2009 RYA Regional Young Sailor of the Year Awards.
Started in 1994, the awards are an opportunity for club members and class associations to nominate a young sailor or powerboater who has made an outstanding impact on the UK boating scene on the race course, around the club, by overcoming adversity or through an exceptional achievement within their RYA Region.
Your young sailor or powerboater must be under the age of 19 as of 31st December 2009. To nominate visit www.rya.org.uk/go/youngsailor . Nominations will be considered by each RYA Region’s awards panel.
RYA Chief Executive Rod Carr commented: “We know there are an enormous amount of young people out there demonstrating great skill within the sport and doing fantastic things at their clubs. The RYA Regional Young Sailor of the Year Awards are an opportunity for us to recognise and celebrate, at a local level, their achievements.”
Past regional winners include: Finn sailor and 2012 hopeful Giles Scott of the RYA East region; the talented young powerboater and sailor Luke McGill also of the RYA East Region who has put an exceptional amount of work into supporting his club; and Sam Coombs, James Hopson and Craig Paul who saved the life of fellow young competitor Nell Hardie in the RYA’s Scottish Region when she became trapped under water whilst sailing a 29er.
NW EXECUTIVE
Next meeting at Royal Mersey
The next meeting of the Executive of the RYA NW Region will be at Royal Mersey YC on 8th September at 7.30. This will be the third “meet the clubs” type meeting, and the Executive is, as usual, inviting clubs from the Greater Manchester and Adjoining Areas so that they can come and hear about latest RYA issues and can then feed their own club issues in to the Executive. The first two meetings at Bassenthwaite and Elton have been popular with reps from local clubs, and it is hoped this will continue. If your club has not received an invite, please contact Graham Knox, Regional Secretary.
RACING
Weymouth set for mega month of World Class sailing events
Late August marks the start of what is guaranteed to be four unforgettable weeks of World Class dinghy and windsurf racing being brought to the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) courtesy of the RYA and UK Sport.
Kicking off with the 2009 IWA Junior, Youth and Masters Windsurfing World Championships on Saturday 22nd(and concluding on 29 August), the regatta is the first of three back-to-back RYA-run World Class events, supported by UK Sport, being staged at WPNSA through until Saturday 19 September.
Following in the immediate wake of the IWA Worlds, the 2009 RS:X World Championships – the windsurfing class competed in at the Olympic Games – is the next event to arrive in Dorset between Monday 31 August – Friday 11 September.
The prestigious multiclass Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta, which for the first time this year doubles up as the final round of the 2009 ISAF Sailing World Cup series, then completes the hat-trick of spectacles as the world’s top Olympic and Paralympic Classes sailors, including champions of past, present and future, will do battle at WPNSA from Monday 14 – Saturday 19 September.
With the RYA and UK Sport also having brought the 2009 Mirror World Championships to British shores this summer – the regatta held at Pwllheli SC in North Wales last month – as well as the announcement that the four regattas comprising the 2010 Laser World Championships will be staged at Largs SC in Scotland and Hayling Island SC in Hampshire next year, there has never been more opportunity to see the World’s best sailors and windsurfers in action.
David Campbell-James, RYA Competitions Manager, said: “It is a really exciting time for everyone involved in World Class sailing and windsurfing in Great Britain.
“The RYA is committed to bringing World Class Championship events to Britain to not only keep further raising the profile of the sport around the UK but to also ensure we continue to develop the skills of individuals officiating and volunteering at these events so that they can take those skills back to their own club and class events and run better quality racing to improve standards across the board nationwide.”
The 2009 IWA Junior, Youth and Masters Windsurfing World Championships incorporate the Bic Techno Under 15 and Under 17 and Raceboard Youth and Raceboard Masters Worlds.
Meanwhile Skandia Team GBR duo Nick Dempsey and Bryony Shaw will be looking to put on a show on home waters as they bid to land RS:X World Championship glory.
Skandia Sail for Gold “Open Doors” at Weymouth and Portland this September
Weymouth and Portland’s world-renowned sailing centre, the venue for the sailing competition at the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, will open its doors with free entry to the public this 19th September, on the day that the medals will be decided at the Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta.
More than 500 boats competing in all 10 Olympic Classes – including the new women’s match racing class – plus the three Paralympic Classes are expected to compete across the week of the Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta (14-19 September), which this year doubles up as the seventh and final round of the 2008-09 ISAF Sailing World Cup series.
“We’re looking forward to welcoming visitors from Weymouth and Portland, Dorset, the South West and beyond, and giving them the chance to find out what an international Olympic Classes regatta is all about,” explained the RYA’s Event Director David Campbell-James.
“The Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta is an important step in the RYA’s efforts to engage the wider public in sailing and to help people better understand and appreciate our sport at its very best.
“In addition to the sailing action there will be a host of interesting stands and displays on show at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy on the Open Day. Visitors will be able to watch the heroes and heroines of Beijing and Athens, and potentially of London 2012, as well as enjoying a big day out.”
Mega screens at WPNSA will bring all the action as events unfold on the race track straight to the shore-based spectators, the footage will be accompanied by live tracking and expert analysis from top names in world sailing, including the BBC’s Beijing Olympic sailing commentary team of Richard Simmonds and double Olympic gold medallist Shirley Robertson.
Families can soak up the atmosphere and watch some of the nation’s most famous sailing names in action such as double Olympic gold medallist Iain Percy, Paul Goodison and Pippa Wilson.
Weymouth and Portland’’s regatta “village’ will include food and refreshment outlets and a diverse host of other stalls including Musto, the clothing manufacturer and retailer, who will be showing off all the year’s new fashions and technical clothing – as worn by Skandia Team GBR sailors.
The action on 19th September includes medal races every half hour between 10:00am and 3:00pm.
The Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta is organised by the Royal Yachting Association, sponsored by Skandia and supported by UK Sport via their National Lottery-funded World Class Events Programme.
To book your free tickets members of the public should log on at: www.skandiasailforgoldregatta.co.uk
CRUISING
Dear Contacts
There is a proposal by Trinity House ( www.trinityhouse.co.uk ) to alter the characteristics of Bardsey Island light. It is outside the Northwest England area, but not far away in North West Wales. YACHT RACING
Liverpool YC Long 6 Offshore Race
The LYC Offshore Trophy race provided the most exhilarating and sustained breezy conditions from start to finish for those few yachtsmen who were fortunate enough to take part.
Severe wind forecast for Liverpool Bay may have been a contributing factor in the low turnout, however Race Officer Bob Nightingale set an imaginative and novel course, stretching over 38.4 miles.
In a good westerly breeze the fleet headed off to the first mark only for Di-Rich to cross the line and retire.
Turning at Dingle and G3, a great sail down the length of the Mersey turned into a real test for our crews as they hurled into the channel proper at Brazil and had to brave the full blast of strong 25-30 mph westerly winds all the way up to Crosby Mid Mark and back to the relatively calmer waters of the Mersey.
Ulula returning from Crosby powered past Gullmaren, on station at Tower in less than two hours, followed some 40 minutes later by Skukusa and Tango. All crews having suffered huge waves across the decks and into the cockpits, and down the wellies! But showing signs as they went past of enjoying their day out!
Onward and upward they sailed to E4, at low water then round for the long downriver leg to the triangles at Tower, Egg and Canada,
The breeze held as, after five hours , Ulula followed by Skukusa and Tango completed this section of the race in fine style and headed up river for the finish.
Ulula was first across the line in six hours nineteen minutes, followed by Skukusa in seven hours sixteen minutes and the dogged Tango in a magnificent six hours thirty one minutes.
All three yachts had sailed great races but there has to be a winner which was Tango, from Skukusa and Ulula.
Ulula’s result today ensured her winning the prestigious Littlewood’s Offshore Trophy, as overall leader in the Long Series: Di-Rich gaining second place and Tango third.
