TOP CLUB
LOCAL SAILING CLUB IS RATED ONE OF TOP FIVE IN THE COUNTRY
Getting into sailing has never been so easy with one of the best clubs in the UK on your door step. Local club Redesmere Sailing Club, near Macclesfield, has been shortlisted as one of the top five places to get on the water by the sport’s national governing body the RYA (Royal Yachting Association).
As a finalist for the RYA’s Club of the Year Awards 2009, Redesmere SC travelled to the RYA Volvo Dinghy Show in London to pick up their award.
Club commodore Colin Barrie commented; “We are absolutely over the moon to be getting this award. Being named as one of the best clubs in the whole of the UK is testament to all the hard work our members and volunteers have put into the club.”
He continued “Sailing is such a great sport and the feeling you get out on the water blasting around is difficult to top. We just want as many people as possible to get involved and enjoy it as much as we do.”
The awards criteria identified clubs that were forward looking and vibrant, worked hard at promoting the sport and encouraged people on to the water through a range of activities. It was also important clubs showed they were making their activities accessible to a wide range of people in the community and ensured all ages and abilities were catered for.
The club has an active website at www.redesmere.org.uk with information about What’s On, and the club welcomes visits from people interested to find out more about taking up sailing.

WE STILL HAVE MONEY TO GIVE TO CLUBS
Up to £500 for your Club Volunteers !
As an RYA Volvo Champion Club, your club can apply for £400 (which must be matched by the club) to help your club to train/retrain/refresh/qualify your volunteers. You can also claim £100 (no match funding required) to recognise & thank the volunteers who make your VCC activities a reality.

LEVEL 2 RACING COACHING COURSES
We are always on the look out for clubs to hold level 2 racing coach courses. If you think your club could hold one please get in touch with Chris or Jenny. If you are not sure if you are suitable to apply please ring us to talk it through RYA Racing Coach Level 2 – (Club Racing Coach).Definition: ‘A qualified RYA Racing Coach Level 2 is a good club racer with personal knowledge of club and/or regional racing and a broad basis of coaching skills able to deliver and award Start and Intermediate Racing and Advanced Racing where appropriate, working at affiliated clubs or recognised training centres.’
The course to become an RYA Racing Coach Level 2 is an intense weekend looking at the theory of coaching and applying it in practical series of on the water exercises. Each candidate will be expected to run complete sessions including a brief, on the water exercises with feedback and a debrief. The aim of the course is to provide candidates with skills and techniques to coach racing to youth and adult sailors.

Tips from The Green Blue on Anti Fouling
“Tips to minimise your environmental damage.”
1. Topside paints, antifouling, varnish, used brushes, rollers, trays and solvents are all hazardous waste and should therefore be disposed of accordingly.
2. The key is to prevent antifouling from unnecessarily entering the water. Skirt the hull when scrubbing down or painting the hull and use a tarpaulin to catch the flakes and drips. Don’t leave a coloured patch under your hull!
3. If washing off on a slipway, use a device such as a loop of rope to catch any paint particulates and then sweep up and dispose of as hazardous waste.
4. Look into alternative hull paints such as hard vinyl, silicone or Teflon, which are suitable for in water hull cleaning systems.
5. Dust from sanding paint and antifouling coatings is toxic. Using a dustless vacuum sander will also protect your health.
6. If you use scrubbing piles, only scrub off the fouling and not the residue paint- be careful not to let the old or new paint enter the water.
7. Select a marina, club or boatyard which has a closed loop scrub down facility which collects residues from wash down.
8. Select the right type of antifouling for your craft and boat usage- take advice from your chandlery. Use water based paints where possible or low Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) paints.
9. Apply the right amount of antifouling required and do not spill it- when applying, use a sheet to collect drips.
CRUISING
Navtex Updates
The RYA has received a number of complaints about poor Navtex reception in the west of Scotland.
At present the RYA is taking part in discussions with the Irish Authorities about improving the quality of transmissions by utilising a new 490kHz transmitter installed at Malin Head.
The theory would be that the Malin Head transmitter would duplicate the Portpatrick transmissions in terms of data and would help fill in any gaps in coverage.
At present, Malin Head only requires the allocation of a new B1 identity character before it becomes operational.
In addition to this, there are a number of changes to all three UK 490kHz Navtex stations.
These are:
Niton:
0120, 0520, 0920, 1320, 1720, 2120
Cullercoats:
0320, 0720, 1120, 1520, 1920, 2320
Portpatrick:
0020, 0420, 0820, 1220, 1620, 2020
In addition to this, the Inshore Waters Forecast and outlook will be broadcast four times a day, at the times shown in bold above, but only once at the other locations.
Reports of actual weather conditions, consisting of sea level pressure, wind direction, wind speed and visibility will be broadcast as and when reports are available on any of the six time slots available from each Navtex station. These will be taken from selected MET office sites.
Any strong wind warnings will be highlighted on the Inland Waters Forecast.
YACHT RACING
IT’S BRASS MONKEYS AT LIVERPOOL
The sixth and final race of the renard-systems.co.uk Brass Monkey series was held on Sunday March 1st. Race Officers Jim Connolly and Bobby Nightingale faced the prospect of a very light Westerly and a strong spring tide but the sun was shining! Fortunately by the race start the wind had increased. Speeds on the final spinnaker run from Dukes to the finish exceeded even those in the previous race and there were some noteworthy broaches on other yachts.
From the shelter of the Lock the course looked as if it might be very difficult to complete with several beats against the tide. At the start several boats went wide and only just managed to get past Pluckington which had an impressive bow wave! After the initial run upstream both fleets beat downriver against the tide before the Class 1 fleet, sailing an 11.7 nM course made five crossings of the river between E2 and G9 before going down to Dukes via Dingle and the final run home. Unusually two of the seven Class 1 fleet decided to retire. Richard Booth’s Another Nods took both line and class honours ahead of Neil Thomas in Mighty Max with Andy Farrell’s “the f word” taking third 30 seconds ahead of Jim Cartwright’s Daydream Believer.
Classes 2 & 3 sailed a 9.9 nM course with a second beat against the tide and only two cross channel crossing before completing the Dingle / Dukes legs. In Class 2 Michael Inman’s Musketeer enjoyed the conditions and dominated the race ahead of Stuart Lofthouse’s Skukusa who managed to take second place 26 seconds ahead of Paul Hampson’s Magic Moments. Warwick Telfer in Clairvoyant managed to cement a series win with a further class 3 victory followed by Annie Ward and Andy Napper’s Di-Rich with Richard Baldwin’s Tango third.
A very good day’s racing was enjoyed by everyone and was topped off by a generous series prize giving from the sponsor Dave Butterfield of Renard Systems.

Medallists Opened Show
Seven of Britain’s history-making Beijing 2008 Olympic and Paralympics’ team sailors, including three gold medallists, kick-started a weekend dedicated exclusively to dinghy sailors when they opened the doors to the RYA Volvo Dinghy Show 2009, in association with Yachts & Yachting and Suzuki.
For the weekend of 7th – 8th March, Alexandra Palace was the home of all things dinghy sailing.
Paul Goodison, Team Volvo for life sailor and Skandia Team GBR’s gold medal winning Laser star said: “This show is fantastic for dinghy sailors no matter what age or ability they are. There are so many great boats, pieces of kit and speakers at the show that everyone comes away with something to improve their sailing.”

RYA SAILABILITY LAUNCH NEW ‘SAILABILITY TV’ AT DINGHY SHOW
RYA Sailability, the charity of the Royal Yachting Association which provides disabled people with access to sailing activities, launched its brand new online information resource ‘Sailability TV’, at the RYA Volvo Dinghy Show 2009.
This unique site provides a one stop shop of information from events, clubs and boats to volunteering, training and promotions for disabled sailors and volunteers alike.
Debbie Blachford, RYA Sailability manager said: “We are delighted to be launching the site, allowing even more people access to information about all the activities available for disabled sailors out on the water around the country. Providing the information in this format allows viewers to get a real feel for what Sailing is all about and what Sailability has to offer; through the great pictures and videos and real life case studies on the show and to really keep viewers engaged.”
