Wrecks and Rescuers

Andrew | February 4, 2008 | 5:26 pm

I popped up to Blackpool on Saturday to have a nosey at ‘The Riverdance’ that’s currently sat on the beach. It was a well-timed visit as the RAF arrived to help the salvage team get people back on board to start the process of pumping the fuel off the ship.

I was also lucky to be a VIP guest of the RNLI to help celebrate 138 years of ‘The Bolton Lifeboat’. It was a brass band concert to celebrate 138 years of the Bolton area RNLI groups raising money for lifeboats. The performers were the Smithills School Senior Brass Band, who are current world champions!

As well as the Mayor of Bolton, the other guest of honour was the Coxwain of the Lytham lifeboat, the first boat on the scene of the rescue of the crew from the Riverdance. At one point during the concert he lept from his seat and dashed out the back of the hall. We thought maybe he’d been called out but it’s too far from Lytham to see the flare go up! It turned out he had to get back stage to present a plaque to the Band for their support of the Lifeboats!
