TEAM 15 WINDSURFING
Sharks plot ascent of Mont Blanc
A shoal of Sharks shinning up a mountain? Sounds a bit fishy.
But no, not when the Sharks in question are T15 team, the Salford Sharks, who are running a fund raising day at Salford Watersports Centre. The team is hoping to raise £1000 for the club’s coaching and transport to T15 inter-club events this summer and to do this they are climbing the height of Mont Blanc – that’s 4807meters!
The team will complete the task on the 31st March 2007 on Salford Watersports’ indoor wall. In order to reach the height they will need to ascend the wall 601 times. Team15 Coach, Paul Hopkins, said “It’s a massive task but will keep the team together over the winter as they will be training at the centre on Wednesday nights running up to the event”.
We wish the Sharks the very best with their training, the climb and most especially their fund-raising efforts. We look forward to seeing a full team of 15 at all four inter-club events this season as a result! The Salford Sharks are running a fund raising day at Salford Watersports Centre in the West Zone. The team is hoping to raise £1000 for the club’s coaching and transport to T15 inter-club
PRESEASON TALKS
Talks at Bolton SC
A good way to prepare for the season is to bone up on techniques with the help of the experts. In the build up to the season, Bolton Sailing Club is hosting a series of talks starting with, “Crewing to Win” by Dale Knowles on Friday 2nd March, staring at 7.30pm.
2nd at both the 2006 GP14 Nationals and Worlds, Dale Knowles will be talking about the crew’s job in making a dinghy go fast (and it’s not just pulling ropes!). From pre-start preparation to upwind, reaching and running in all wind conditions, Dale will be providing his insights from 20 years of crewing GP14s with some of the best helms in the country.
The second of the series will be on Friday 9th March, starting at 7.30pm, “Sail knowledge and dinghy tuning to win” by Neil Platt.
Everybody welcome. Free of charge. See for details and directions see www.sail.org.uk.

LAKE DISTRICT
Lake District climbdown on fees to boaters
The Lake District National Park Authority has climbed down from its efforts to impose increased taxes on Windermere boaters, and instead has agreed to cutting fees to just £5 per boat. The new fees come into effect immediately, and follow an outcry by local boaters, their clubs and the RYA Region.
Previously all powered craft paid into the Windermere Registration Scheme, with an average charge – based on the length – being about £45. However last year a “loophole” was discovered in the byelaws, which allowed vessels to be exempt from paying fees to the LDNPA if they are already registered with the Small Ships Register (SSR).
Now the LDNPA has decided to fall into line, cutting its fees to be similar to the SSR – namely £5 a year for existing members and £10 for new registrations. The LDNPA also agreed to scrap a previous registration scheme for special one-off events, which operated last year.
The decision was announced just a few days before the closure of the LDNPA’s consultation period about charges. RYA NW Chairman Howard Reynolds Jones welcomed the decision,”I’m delighted to hear that the Park Authority has listened to arguments from boaters and reached the right conclusion. I trust that they will now confirm that they are dropping their other ideas for extra charges.”

GREEN BLUE
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES WITH GREEN BLUE
Do you enjoy using the water?
Ever wondered what you could do to help the environment?
The Green Blue is the flagship environmental awareness programme from the Royal Yachting Association and the British Marine Federation. It aims to educate the boating community about its environmental impacts and how to minimise them.
The Green Blue is now seeking up to 10 enthusiastic people to play an essential voluntary role in representing The Green Blue at events across your region.
As a volunteer you will be trained in issues covered by The Green Blue and then asked to attend a number of boating events throughout the year. You will then be able to represent The Green Blue at events such as boat shows, boat jumbles and regattas around your region. You could also be asked to do speaking engagements on behalf of the programme and give talks to local and regional clubs and interested groups.
We need people who are passionate about sailing and boating activities and who have some knowledge, but more importantly, enthusiasm for the environment. Full training will be given and you will need your own transport.
This is a voluntary role and travel, entry fees and subsistence costs will be covered by agreement with the Project Development Officer. The role will include weekend and occasional evening work and could include transporting and setting up a mobile display and running competitions.
For more information about The Green Blue, visit www.thegreenblue.org.uk or contact Katherine Rowberry, Project Development Officer, for more details about the opportunity and application pack on info@thegreenblue.org.uk or 023 8060 4227.
